There's a lot of stuff on the Internet these days: cat videos, memes, blogs, news... Think of any topic and it most likely has a forum, website, and a blog about it. With so much information out there, it can be difficult to make sure the content consumers are reading YOUR stuff.
Enter SEO & SEM. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Essentially, it's about getting your website/blog/content/whatever to the top of search engine results so it attracts more readers. You know about Google and Yahoo, but do you know what a search engine actually is? Allow Matt Cutts, an engineer in the Quality Group at Google, to explain:
Pretty cool, right? Now, SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and it's all about marketing and advertising within search engines. Google has a marketing tool called Keyword Planner that works with you to discover what words you should include on your website/blog to help increase traffic. I decided to do this for myself and see how Pretty Little Bow (PLB) should be including in its posts and content.
First, I entered five keywords that I believe to be related to the content shared and posted on PLB. For my site, I used the words: blog, marketing, advertising, pretty little bow, and pretty little blog.
After entering the keywords, Keyword Planner brought up a list of other words I should be using on my blog to increase my SEO. Some of the words/phrases suggested include marketing strategy, marketing agency, internet marketing, blog, and free advertising.
Keyword Planner also includes the average monthly searches for these keywords. This is how many times that word/phrase is entered into a Google search. The higher the number, the more searches are done and vice versa. For the keywords/phrases suggested here are the average monthly searches:
- "Marketing strategy": 107,320
- "Marketing agency": 22,490
- "Internet marketing": 59,790
- "Blog": 54,480
- "Free advertising": 38,990
Once you have this information, the next step is to try and implemented it on your website. Given my search results, I should be saying things like, "Pretty Little Bow is an marketing agency which helps create a marketing strategy for online blogs and websites."
SEO/SEM are very important when it comes time to start telling others about your website/blog. You want to know what keywords and phrases will bring your site to the top of search results so you can increase your reach. Increasing your reach means more readers and more people involved with what you're doing (which could mean higher sales!).
